He served as a Federal Criminal Justice Act Panel attorney in the Northern District of Illinois, Northern District of Indiana and the Western District of Michigan.

His father Richard James Stevens practiced law in Illinois for 60 years. His uncle John Paul Stevens is a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
